Hi

I am new here so I apologise if I am posting this in the wrong place, and I know it is the sort of question you get all the time, but from my experience the best way to get impartial advise is from fellow fish keepers.

I have been keeping freshwater for 15 years both fancy goldfish and tropical and as I am moving house and have an empty tank :(, I am researching marine. I already have a basic awareness of the needs of these fish eg, heat, salt, water quality but filtration is a bit of a puzzle, do I need a skimmer and another filter, eg internal? I have a 120liter Boyu tank, so it is tall rather than long, so would welcome ideas of how to set up and mature a small tank and what fish breeds would be good for someone new?

Many thanks

Jo

I moved the post here for more attention from the salty side. I work over in the freshwater side but found this stranded in the saltwater species index. I hope you guys can help out a new member.

:hi: Jo to the salty side of the forum - jump on in :good:

Many of us started with the orca 550 its a grand tank for your first nano. Start by reading some of the journels that use this specific tank, mine included. There are a couple of people who are setting this very same tank up at the moment - take a look in the Marine Journel section, take notes and ask lots of questions.

To just answer a few of your questions:
Live rock is the heart and lungs of most marine systems - they are your filter
Is your tank the fresh water version?
You can buy the small boyu skimmer, its very inexpensive and works fine for this tank.
You will need a powerhead for flow around the live rock
a refractometer for measuring SG
Probably need to buy new tubes
aragonite sand
Water storage/carrying jerry type cans
test kits for ammonia, nitrate, nitrate and ph to start with

Think that is enough for you to be going on with
