Fish Crazy
I currently am running a Hagen Marina Slim S15 filter on my 10 gallon planted tank. The only way for there to be enough circulation that all of the tank's surface moves, is to drop the water level to just above where the output meets the water's surface. Which is fine except my crowntail betta is then unable to fight the current, gets knocked around and hides in the corners. So I was thinking, if I were to replace the powerhead for for S15 with one from the S20, it would up the flow, and I could just up the water level and/or the control valve to regulate the speed.
Why not just use the entire S20? Well, I don't know that I have the space, or that I want that much filtration. Three "panels" seems like it is plenty, even too much, and I don't want my filter to take too much nutrients from my plants. Four just seems like a gimmick to sell more filter cartridges. But then again, the S20 would move the output more centerwards, which might be helpful in the end to the same goal.
But regardless, do you think the two powerheads are interchangable? Do they use the same gauge input and output piping?
[EDIT] The reason why this is important is that I had some staghorn algae in my tank, which is caused, as I understand, by insufficient flow. So I spread out the plants that were concerned, after cleaning them off and it has been fine until now. But I am convinced that it will just happen again if I don't correct the problem.
