Anyone know where they sell Male Plakats in Miami, FL. All the stores in the area have only VTs. I've tried looking at Aquabid but they are very expensive with shipping as they are breeding stock. I just want a nice finned Plakat for a 10 gallon. I don't plan on breeding so a pet quality Plakat that still looks good but doesn't carry any special traits would be fine.

Have a look through the 'females', you occasionly find male plakats jumbled up in those. Or juvie other tail types.

Your guess is as good as mine. For all of it's charm, unless it's Marine or giant cichlids, Miami leaves much to be desired regarding fish. I am from there as well, and am always disappointed with their selection, especially regarding rarer cyprinids and anabantoids. I plan on doing a pretty thorough search for some decent LFS when I return. Where in Miami are you? I live in West Kendall. Have you tried Exotic Aquariums on Bird road? It'll be on your left hand side if you're coming from the west. Last time I was there, they had some pretty nice ones and even a half giant plakat. I'm positive they could order what you want. My only problem is that the quality was not as good as it has been.

I do know, however, that several transhippers reside in Miami, and there should be several breeders in the area.

See if IBC has a Miami chapter--they often have forums and/or meetings where you can meet breeders and sometimes they'll have fish for sale (or trade). They'll also often know who is breeding plakats, or at least where to look for quality fish.

I've been to exotic Aquariums. The day I went there Betta's were all pretty much dead, sitting in little cups. I'll try passing by tomorrow as they receive shipments on Tuesday. Then I'll try BigAl's in Tamarac this weekend. Thanks for the help.

That's unfortunate about Exotic aquariums. I told you I was disappointed last time I went, they have really gone downhill. Five years ago, that was THE place to go, now? :dunno:

Oooooo, there's a BigAl's in Tamarac? Ooooo, let me know how this goes. IBC has a South FL chapter that's in the Everglades. Everglades Betta Society. Try contacting them. Their contact email is posted in the IBC FL chapters page below. Let me know how this goes, as I plan on joining IBC when I move back. If there's enough interest, perhaps a Miami chapter could be started, since I really don't see myself trekking all the way down to the Everglades for meetings. Or I could carpool with other Miami members. I'm rambling and thinking aloud.

Try using the yellow pages and calling up all the fish shops you can find to ask if they have plakats?

I checked out Exotic Aquariums today. The Bettas were all dead, as in lying on the bottom of the cup not moving with shredded fins. Pretty sad. I did buy one Java Fern and what they sold as Anachris. These are my first two live plants. After looking at a pic of Anachris online though this looks nothing like it. We'll see how it goes.

If I go to BigAl's this weekend and see anything worth mentioning I'll post it here. Although last time I went there were only about 5 Betta cups and they also were badly shredded and dying.

Now, I am depressed. :-( There seems to be a lot of stores springing up on US 1 towards Perrine that I may check out when I come back in May. Bird road just isn't what it used to be. Most of my stuff I get online anyways, but they sell the more common fish species, and I'm like you, I want some of the more exotic species. Too bad.
