Hey, I'm new here :fun: I was on the boardwalk about a month ago and won a Betta fish. I've been caring for Sparky(it's name) and it grew and is doing great! Well..a week ago I went back to the boardwalk and couldnt help but win another! The Beta I chose seemed to be in shock and I couldn't bare to let it stay there and suffer! the poor thing needed air! So I decided to take it and now my betta is better than ever..I have yet to come up with a name for it..but im looking for something having to do with its luck because it seemed as if it has a low chance of survival...ANYWAYS my question is how exactly can you tell the difference between a male and female betta?

females have short finnage, very different in appearance from males. Your very kind for choosing the sickly betta and giving him a chance at life, surely some clean water and good food will help him recover from his trauma, good luck with that ;)
By the way ...welcome to the forum!

To quote my 8 year old "Lady bettas look like floppy goldfish, only a different colour". So there you are :p

Once you see the two compared you'll never mistake them again :). Like previous posts have said, the females have smaller fins while the males are long and flowing (assuming he's full grown). Male bettas are more common than female simply because the males are more appealing and sell better. The females are sold mostly for breeding. Unlike their counterparts, they are not as aggressive and can be kept in community tanks.

Ok don't forget there are short finned males they appear slimmer than females. However males generally have long fins and females have shorter. Females are also alot less colourful when compared to males.
