I have been keeping bettas for a couple years, not professionally or anything too crazy. I came across this little guy at petco who was being sold as a “white opal male” however it seems the fish has an ovipositor. It does seem to be a younger fish considering it is barely an inch if not less. I can only see the little bump when the pelvic fins are flared. The pelvic fins are a bit thicker as well. You have to zoom in to see the potential ovipositor on the photos below. Trying to decide on a name lol. Any pointers help!

Can you get the fish to flare at its reflection? That can be a good indicator. Flared gills just at the side of the head is usually female while gills that go all the way under the 'chin' as well indicates male.

So I tried the mirror, didn’t really want to flare at it :/ when it was flaring it was just barely I couldn’t view under the chin

You need a gender-neutral name till the fish settles in enough to decide ;)

The shape of its body looks like female, but your betta is way too young to be 100% sure!

Exactly, I’m surprised they put these babies in those awful cups at the pet store. They are starting to look more and more female as the days go on but when the fins perk up and out all the way they kind of look more male bodied so still not sure lol

One of my local stores got a shipment of 100 females a few years ago, except about 40 of them turned out to be shortfinned plakat males. That was a busy tank, and a very annoyed shop owner as the conditions were all wrong for that many males, and he had to cup a lot of fish to ease the fighting.

If it's a normal long finned betta and the tips of both anal fin and dorsal seems pointy, it's a male for sure. Female and very young males can have the tip of the dorsal and the anal fin a bit rounded.
With certain betta strains with only rounded fins(like rose fins or cauliflower fins, for instance), this tip what I've just mentioned, doesn't apply.
