you don't until they pair up & breed. I believe females have wider breeding tubes than males.

i got told by the guy who owns the pet shop i buy from that males sometimes have a bump on their foreheads.
i don't know if this is true or not.

yeah males normaly have a bump develope on their forhead overtime

the is lots of myths on how to tell them apart, i find the only true way is when they pair off and there breeding tubes develope, males is long thin and pointy, were as males is short fat and stumpy
my silver male and koi female<proven breeders>

see its quite difficult to tell them apart
