In one of my fry tanks, I have two different guppy varieties that are approximately 2 months old. This morning I noticed that one of my males was acting a little sluggish which is very unusual. This particular fish is about an inch to an inch and a quarter long give or take a little. Upon further investigation this male looks very healthy but under his right pectoral fin, at a right angle to his body, it appears excrement is coming out. It is the same color as the others, tan color as the fish food, but instead of coming out of the intended orifice, it is coming out of his side. It would resemble a tan brush bristle perpendicular to his body.

Now, are there any suggestions for helping this fish, or is euthanization the only method. As well, are there any other implications for the other tank mates, or would this appear to be a genetic malfunction?

Are you sure that it is feces and not a parasite such as anchor worm?

No, I am not. It is about 3/16" long and is straight. No movement noticed on it.

Would an anchor worm show movement and would it appear to be tan?

Anchor worms are pretty stiff little guys so no, I wouldn't expect you to see movement. Yes, they can appear tan.

I gently netted the fish and put him in an inspection container. Whatever this is came off in the netting process. There is a tiny mark at the site indicating a hole. If it appears again in a short amount of time, would this be enough indication that it is feces or can an anchor worm attach quickly?

I do not see any signs on any other of the fry.

Anchor worms don't typically detach that easily but I wouldn't say that it is impossible. Let us know if it returns.
