Hi

I recently bought 3 female and 2 male sunset wagtail platies - I also got 4 red guppies. All the red guppies were male, but I thought as I didn't have any female guppies that wouldn't matter.

I thought wrong, the poor female platies not only had the male platies after them, but also all four male guppies! The poor things didn't get a minutes peace! Don't Platies stick to platies and Guppies to guppies?

My husband and I had an amusing conversation about what the babies of Guppies and platies would be called 'Pluppies' or 'Glaties'!

Anyway on my next stock intake I got 6 red/blonde female guppies! much to the delight of my tomato colour males!

The ratio does depend on their individual personality... As mentioned already, 3:1 or higher is better. Personally, I wouldn't keep them at 3:2(F:M) since that coudl seriously stress out the females especially if both males are after the same female...

I'd recomend at least 3:1 and higher if you can get there.... You will still need lots of hiding places for the females though...

Do let us know if you get any Pluppies or Glaties! Seriously the males in my monastery tank show off to anything with fins, they don't seem to care what it is, so long as it's fishy they are all :hyper: . Glad you got them some company. Can you get some silk or real plants for the females of both species to hide in when they've just had enough of all these roving casanovas? Let us know how it goes!

As stated before some fish are more harassitive (if thats a word) towards females ... some are good with 1:2 or maybe even 1:1 but some may require 1:5 just too keep it spred out
