Hi all,

Curious as to other people’s experience with keeping 1 male and 1 female dwarf gourami together? (With other community fish)

They seem to have a very strange relationship where one day the male will be dominant, the next the female. I got one of each because I wanted a male but didn’t want him to be lonely, which in hindsight is probably dumb 😂. I’m not actually sure they enjoy each other’s company at all, is it likely to change? They’ve been together about a month now.

For info, they’re in a Juwel Rio 125L with 6 zebra danio, 4 peppered cory, 4 albino Cory, 10 neon tetra and 7 amano shrimp. Ammonia and nitrites both at 0. Don’t yet have a test kit for nitrates but have the full NT Labs test kit on order.

Cheers!

I'm envious...the ladies are in short supply and I can't get hold of them for love nor money.*

I once had a pair and they were very much together for 5 years. Then she passed away and he followed her less than a month later.
(Water was fine and no other fish passed, before you ask. ;) )

*Same situation with Dwarf Gourami...before anyone else says it! :p

😂 the only place I could find female dwarf gourami was at a local pets at home, none of the specialist shops in the area seemed to have any!

I hope my 2 end up like yours but it seems unlikely at the moment!

Don't keep them too warm and you'll have fun of them for quite a long time. These fish are quite temp-sensitive. At higher temps the male will get in and stay in matingmood very fast / constantly with the result it will get more agressive towards the female / other fish. Constantly in that mood will shorten its lifespan and make it a less friendly fish in your tank.

All your fish can be kept at a bit cooler temps (around 24C would be great)

Heaters set to 24C and thermometer always reads between 24 & 25C so that seems good!

He seems to have taken ownership of the floating plants today and chases her off whenever she goes over there. I read somewhere (can’t remember where) that the males do this when they’re building nests?
