Hi everyone,
I got some (2 adults and about 8 babies, very small) Malaysian Trumpet Snails the other day to help turn my gravel over. I put them in the tank and shortly after they disapeared into the gravel. I am wondering how I know if they are doing well?

Is there anything I can put in the tank as a treat which will make them show themselves so I can be sure they are still alive and well? I tried spinach tonight but, so far, they haven't taken the bait.. ;)
Or, do you think if I turn the light on in the middle of the night I might catch them out and about?

Thanx so much for any help!

i wouldnt recommend this as the sudden burst of light is blinding to the fish and kind f stresses them. Think of it this way do you like going sitting in a dark movie theatre just to get blinded as you exit. As far as treats im sure there is but i dont have any exsperience with snails to be able to tell you. I would either invest in lunar lights (they are awesome, just put mine on) or gradually turn on light as in light another light in the room and let them ajust to that before turning on the tank lights. Good Luck and im sure someone will respond about the treats.

I had THOUSANDS of these in my tank but didnt realise, one night after 2 hours of sleep i got up to get a drink when i thought one of my cory's was dead, so i turned the lights on and couldn't believe how many MTS were in my tank it was amazing, if i had to guestimate :shifty: i would say over 3000  but luckily it was a false alarm with my cory :good:

So just turn your lights off in your tank and in the room they are in, close the curtains, and wait for an hour or two, they should start to climb the glass.

O and about the treats...... cucumber, lettuce, peas, anything like that, cucumber seems to work the best though.

Just look in the tank with a flashlight at night, you should see them. Eventually you will notice a LOT of them at night, as their populations steadily increases.

Good job getting them, they're great additions to any tank. :good:

3000! Wow!! That must have been a shock! Now I am wondering if I have had some in there even b4 I put the new ones in there. I put cucumbers in the tank at night for my apple snails and, recently, in the morning I have noticed the cucumber is just about completely gone. I put in WAY more than my 2 small apples could eat.. I had just assumed it was my fishes but now I am wondering it its trumpets as I have also noticed a drastic decrease in the algea on the glass of my tank in the past few weeks..

Can't wait to get a good look at them!

Thanx so much for the advice! Will do..

Did you actually pay for these?..... just wondering because i have them all the time when buying plants.

Thanx so much! Will do tonight.. Wonder if they will be all over the cucumber I am about to put in there!

 um.. yes, I did, BUT they were only $3.00 and that was for 10 of them. Only, now I am wondering if I already had some in my tank as I also have many plants and I have been noticing the veggies I put in my tank for my Apple Snails is all but disapearing during the night...

darn.. I have put cucumber, spinach and algea wafers in there and been peeking in late at night for the past couple of nights.. Haven't seen any of the trumpets.

Do you think I should give it a few more weeks b4 I try to get a few more trumpets and try once more? I hope my fishes didn't find and eat them...

What kind of fish do you have? Unless they're puffers or loaches I wouldn't think they would go for them.

MTS are tougher than nails, you may just be missing them as you have so few.

I have 2 goldfish. Ok, I will give it a while longer. Hopefully they are moving about but I am just not seeing them..

thanx for the reply..

Usually you know they are doing well when in a short period of time, your 10 have multiplied into thousands!
I have them in all my tanks, and they seem to breed fastest in the warmest water. Maybe your temperature is inhibiting their growth? All my tanks are tropical, so I'm not sure how low a temperature thay can stand.

On a side note, be careful with these buggers....... my 11 inch Oscar recently ate one - without chewing! It's shell got stuck - SIDEWAYS! at the end of his 'digestive tract' if you know what I mean! Ouch!
(Oscar is fine, he passed it in a couple of hours with the help of some Epsom Salts and frozen Peas. It doesn't stop him from eating more snails.)

I finally saw 2 of my MTS tonight! So I know there are definitely some in there! :good: Thanx so much for all the advice guys.. I really appreciate it!
