Hey, I was wondering about getting about 10 or so MTS in my 180 litre tank after hearing all the good things about them. But I've also heard from several people that they a prolific breeders and this is kinda putting me off.

So should them breeding be a problem? Keep in mind that I do have quite a few dead leaves on the ground in my tank but I never overfeed my fish.

They will breed more prolifically when you have a lot of detritus and leftover food in the substrate. They will breed regardless though. People like them because they aerate the substrate and are great for planted tanks. If you don't have a planted tank and have no issues with doing weekly gravel vac, I would not bother with them. Keep in mind that once you get them, you have them forever.

MTS are great at keeping sand clean. They do eat up all leftover food and veg. Yes they breed but population won't get out of control unlees you overfeed. Personally I like them and have had them in most of my tanks for 2 years with no problems

Thanks for the advice.

My tank is heavily planted and there are many places that I cannot reach when cleaning gravel. There is also some algae in the tank (not much though) which I hear they will consume in time. I'm aware that I'll be stuck with them if I do get them. The main problem is that I have detritus lying around (mainly dead leaves) so is this a big issue?

Dead leaves shouldn't be a problem. My tanks have chunks of cucumber and courgette in them for the plecs -snails love them too.In spite of this I don't have an MTS problem though ramshorm are breeding like guppies!
