Malaysian Trumpet Snail, Breeding?

Trumpet snails ...well they just do.. they dont need 2 snails to breed. unlike apple snails that need one of each sex. They also give birth to tiny live snails and not eggs, like most snails do. You dont need to do anything, they wil happily reproduce a long as food is available. They love protein based pellets like bloodworm pellets etc.

I've got betta pellets, frozen bloodworms and tropical flakes. :sly: Could I breed them in a one gallon jar or is this too small?

They'll breed anywhere i think, just make sure the water quality remains good.
I got 4 from the lfs 6 weeks back, now they're about 2cm each and giving birth to loads of babies.

They prefer sand, mine are usually burried in it during the day.

You need to remember that Malayan livebearing snails need warm water, so simply putting them in a jar on a windowsill won't work. Optimal conditions are a sandy substrate, water at 25C or more, water chemistry hard and alkaline, and no fishes that eat snails. As far as food goes, algae pellets seem to be very popular with them.

They're wonderful animals, and in my opinion, essential in tanks with a sandy substrate.

Cheers,

Neale

I can probably accomplish that with a light, our PH is naturally 7.6 + (it's probably off the chart) and I could buy some sandy substrate next time we go to petsmart.
