I am thinking of setting up a 24x12x12 inch tank with malawi cichlid but was wondering a few things before i do so:
1. how many malawi's should i keep in it?
2. what sort of living arrangements should i provide?
3. if planted what sort of light should i use?

Thx for the help :)

1) Depends on the type of fish you are getting. For starters, I would not recommend getting a cichlid tank yet. Start off with something easy, such as a community tank, or guppy tank.

2) In Malawi tanks, usually there are a lot of rocks that form caves so aggressive fish don't kill all the other ones. They need places to hide.

3) If you are going planted, you can get help in the plant forum. They have many experts there that will help you. But I wouldn't put plants in a Malawi tank. The tank IMO doesn't look as good with plants.

None. 24x12x12 is too small to keep any Malawi species.

Have you considered Tanganyikan shell dwellers?
