I'm thinking polyester rather than cotton to try and minimise risk of dye leaching out into water. Has anyone done this before? Any tips?

I have always made spawning mops from "knitting cotton". These are artificial plants of a sort I suppose. Dark green works best. Don't use wool yarn, it can't cope with the hot water you use to sterilise between spawnings.

I think you are right to try polyester rather than cotton. When I tie my moss onto bogwood I use cotton thread because I know that in 3 weeks time or so the cotton will have dissolved leaving the moss attached. Aquarium water mushes up cotton.

Righty ho.
First step I think will be soaking a few offcuts of various fabric in jars of tank water to see what happens to them then!
