Making Live Rock

Just put ocean rock in a marine tank and after a few months it turns live, naturally??

I think in another thread someone tells you to buy some ocen rock and LR to save money, this is what they are saying.

I've made my own live rock from cement and oyster shells. Boy was it ugly... but very useful as base rock and for attaching corals.

Ocean rock will not turn into live rock - it is much to dense

What you can add is Reef bones which is dried out live rock and that works

or of course you can make it by the garf method

Typo?

rock will turn into live rock if in ocean near the presense of live rock, density does not matter as much but if there is some sort of porosity to it, it will become live. The definition of live can also be argued though.

The rock sold in shops as 'Ocean Rock' is much too dense

well dense rock can become live rock, unfortunately ive never seen something called "ocean rock" or whatever at my local fish stores so i am unsure how dense it is. If there are no pores at all, your right, if tehre are so, then it can become live IMO.

Where are u located

In the UK a lot of shops sell something called 'Ocean Rock' which is not porous

So what I need to do is get Base Rock (Ocean Rock) and put it in with my Live rock, and it will turn into live rock. Right?

Lynden: How do you create the live rock from Cement, and oyster shells? Can you add a picture? - I would like to try that.

budde, just try to find the most porous rock possible that is preferably calcium carbonate (limestone, aragonite etc)

Referring to my original thread this is what I told budde!!

If he recalls another thread he was told to use base rock, which is what I am getting at?
