I am currently running a 55g freshwater with an emperor biowheel filter, the one rated for 55 gallon tanks. I found a 55g acrylic tank at the side of the road, (with a nice stand!) and now want to start a 2nd tank. I have been looking at the magnum 350 pro filter, but i dont know how the bio wheels work. the bio wheels on my emperor are simple, as they are in the hob filter. the acrylic tank i found cannot house hob filters, so thats why i'm looking at canister filters. however, do the biowheel parts of the magnum 350 pro system work like hob filters? anyone knowledgeable about magnum filters please help! I don't want to buy the pro version which comes with the biowheels if they wont even work with my acrylic tank.

if the biowheels dont work with my acrylic tank, what do i do to remove nitrates or nitrates or whatever the heck it is? i've always relied on the bio wheels and water changes to do that. thanks for the help, I know I sound inexperienced but I've kept fish longer than these thread may allude. thanks!

heres the filter I'm referring to.

For an acrylic tank, you are often faced with wide tank lips that make standard filter attachments difficult. A simple solution to that issue would be to use filters that are internal to the tank such as large sponge filters with power heads or nice "internal" filters like the Fluval 4+ that I have in my 40 gallon long.
This is a picture of a large sponge filter before it was placed in my tank.

This is the kind of power head I use to drive it.

The wheel approach is not really needed as long as you maintain a constant flow of water through any biological filter medium. In-tank solutions are easier with the wide rims on a typical "European brace" aquarium as we often see in acrylics.

I know about in tank filters but i wanted to go with a canister filter just for aesthetic purposes
