Hey all,

Sorry if this has been posted before but I am new to the forum and couldn't find anything to help me! I bought a few lyretail guppies recently. I had never heard of them before, but thought they were a really attractive species for my aquarium. My question is how do I sex them? Are lyretails simply a type of male guppy? I have read alot about how they can breed with any kind of female (guppy) but was hoping there was a male and female lyretail. How do you tell the difference?

I also wondered if folk had advice on how to "save" fry as mine keep getting eaten! I only have three from a guppy left, saying that it had given birth in the bag on the way home from the aquatic store so there wasn't much I could do about that!

Thanks!

Male guppies have a pointed anal fin (the fin under the body in the middle)
They also have more colour in the body and fins.
Lyretail's only develop on male's

Cool thanks, I knew all the other differences just wasn't sure if lyretail was a varient of male. Cheers for clarifying!

The best way I have fiound to save fry is toi set up a separate tank where the female can drop fry. I put a nice clump of java moss or a similar plant in there for the fry to hide in and then I make sure the female is well fed. When I notice she has dropped her fry, I remove the female and leave the fry behind in the tank to grow up a bit. Even in a heavily populated tank like this one, you will get enough guppy fry survival to lead to overcrowding if there is decent cover.

That clump of java moss is just full of fry all the time.
