ah ok then just wanted to make sure as i didn't want it to leak because i havnt put any on :)

I wouldn't purposely open it up just to lube it, do it the next time you give the filter a clean. Just apply it to the rubber seal, what I do is with my filter where the seal can be removed is just run the seal through my fingers which have some vaseline on. I've read that vaseline is supposed to stop the rubber from hardening and cracking so if this is true then it also should prolong the life of the seal.

I'm sure the seal on my cloned tera external is silicon

I did smear lightly with vaseline (couldn't find my sili grease) but for me i solely don't think it's to stop hardening/decay of the seal (obviously if seal is deffo rubber then yes it needs all the help it can get)

The way i see it is more like this, without grease of some desciption over time the seal does just that and forms a pretty tight bond, so when you come to remove the top/cap etc it could be a bit of a pain to break the seal as such

So for me with modern materials i think the lube is for user-easiness as not to damage the seal itself (if that makes sense)

ye i only would do it when i clean out my filter. just because i heard someones went and leaked out water ( dont want that on my 4ft tank lol) so i think i might just to be safe i take it there will not be any harm in doing so ?

I don't know if you noticed but Tetratec do actually grease there new O rings I know this as I have just got a new 1200 myself Fantastic little pump :good:

Yep just wait till you have to open it up for standard cleaning and maintenance.

As to application I think someone else said a smear will do.

The reason it is recommended is that the rubber O ring if closed dry will make a good seal that will keep everything dry but over a period of time a dry O ring will start to perish through friction, it may only be minuscule degradation but you don't need much for water under pressure to find a way through and leak.
