My 5kg fire extinguisher (after 2 months so I doubt its running out) is running at 14 bar. The bubble rate is still adjustable and seems fine. Is there a danger of the co2 being dumped into the tank, or will the needle valve prevent this?

yes it can

my 500 gram cylender was on around 49 bar and the next day it was on about 14 bar (drop checker was very orange)

luckily for me i didnt lose any fish but ive heard on it a few times on here now and its was recommended to me to change around 50 bar

however im not 100% sure as your is a FE (Fire Extinguisher) and not sure what the pressure was to start with also should a 5kg last alot longer? mine last about 1 month for a 500 gram?

It was at 52 bar pressure when it was new. And yeah a 5kg bottle should last for ages, unless it was near empty when I first got it(unlikely).

The needle valve is ok running at 14 bar but only just, if the pressure drops even lower it wont be good.
