I was checking an online shop and beyond the "bioballs" and carbon and noodles, they sell zeolite and other local costs filter material. They also have some not so cheap ones from seachem and others.

so what low-cost/not to expensive "special" material have you used in your canister? which one would you recommend?

thank you

Just layer them in the canister like you would with sponge.

This is what they look like in one of the baskets of my big Rena canister.

You can see that I cut one in half to help things fit better. It is the compact plastic bits with the huge surface area that makes these such good filtermedia, not the original shape from the manufacturer.

I got mine from Wilkinsons, I think they were something silly like 35p for five. But I've seen them in pound shops, supermarkets will sell them but probably at a bit of a higher price.

lol went to wilkos it was 58p for 6

so i need them for my big tank so my dad said get 10

but there was 11 so got another pack so

we went to the till with 66 pot scrubers two holepunches and a can of deodorant

wow we got some funny looks xd

so note to everyone dont buy tomany

That picture is my whole stack of baskets for my Rena, Jarthel. The basket under the one with the pot scrubbers has bioballs in it. I bought the bioballs before I found out about pot scrubbers but I couldn't see throwing them out. The pot scrubbers are in the space that started out with carbon in it. As I learn more, I move things around but I seldom toss media except for carbon and filter floss.
