Well, i came home from a really good New Years Eve night this morning to find my beautiful lovebird dead :-( Her mate had killed her  This is the second mate he has killed so i am not getting him another. I'm hoping to rehome him with a friend of mine (she had a senegal from me so is good with birds!) who has several large aviaries as i think he will be happier in a big aviary with other birds.

The blue one is the little girl who died, the green one is the one who killed her :-( Poor birdie...

With that sharp pointy beak & claws.

I used to keep a mixed aviary of lovebirds & cockatiels some time ago & had a male lovebird go rabid like this & killed 3 birds in one night. I don't know why, they was all alright for over a year & got up one morning to find 2 cockatiels & a female lovebird dead & him absolutely covered in blood. He must have got the hump or something?

 that's shocking and horrendous ! never knew they could be so evil

If they truely pair up it's no problem. They will live like it for years, but if one dies it can cause a lot of problems trying to get them to piar with another, as jessica is finding.

I think the males are a bit more choosy?

When I was at my peak I had around 30 birds. Used to breed them and swap them for credit at the lps.

Used to keep finches & canaries before that but the parakeet style birds are a bit more of a challange as they ony raise a few at a time & the raising period is much longer. They are also more friendly, although not as much as one kept in a cage as they have more of a wild streak about them.

If you like birds then take the plunge & put them in the garden, you will get much more out of it. I used to sit next to my aviary with a coffee/snacks etc for hours. Not that dear just a 6x4 shed with a 6ft+ flight. About the same price as a 4ft juwel.

Yes, lovebirds are known for being evil unfortunately :( I know of several who have killed their mates before - i would imagine its especially common when they're kept in cages like mine were. It was a big cage (macaw sized) but still, the female couldnt get away from him :-(

Unfortuantely my friend cant take my little lovebird as she just lost her pair in the aviary and she doesn't want to take anymore on until she finds out what caused it, so going to have to see if i can sell him :(

I have always kept 2 budgies together, replacing the oldest one as necessary. About 6 months ago one died and I decided not to replace him. My one budgie was quite ok not really bothered. Last August I was out in the street and some woman I didnt know had a budgie in a cage I said something to her passing time of day how you do..she said do you want this bird or I will let it out...I said dont be daft she said I will...so I took it off her hands...bird was neurotic hardly any feathers and used to stand on one leg and hold his wing with the other leg...cage was the pits but luckily had a spare one. After about 2 weeks I tried to put her in with my girl budgie as mine was frantic to get near to the new one. After separating them twice they are now in own cages. The rehomed budgie went for my budgie in mid flight. If you ever see sparrows arguing they sort of lock together this is what she did. So they now have both cages perched (pun) on top of my big tropical fish tank and they talk to one another. Rehomed budgie wont eat any tit bits hates being cleaned out but at least her feathers have grown and she hardly ever holds her wing now.
