1.which colour do you like? the darker gravel might make the poo less noticable 2. how do you mean change your fillters? do you mean clean them? 3.lights are used mainly so you can see your fish also depending on which lights you use the intensity of the colours of your fish plus if you have live plants in your tank then you will need to have lights which need to be on for at least 10 hours a day 4.most pleco types depending on what you want them for, depends on which snails as some are just pests 5.best place for the heater is where the water can circulate freely around so near the fillter is a possibility as long as the water flows in direction of heater hope this helps :D

1. I've noticed that natural looking gravels ("nutmeg") make fish poop less noticable. Black and other dark colors will, too.
2. Rinse your filter media in tank water whenever it gets gross looking. You don't need to actually change it unless it gets torn or broken in some way.
3. If you don't have live plants, leaving lights on all day is a recipe for Algae. Only keep lights on when you want to watch your fishies ^^
4. Plecos (Bristlenose will go good in a 55g) and otos. Some people hate snails, but if you use a sand substrate they are helpful. I think snails are rather interesting.
5. Clunkster put it best : Leave heater wherever water flows best.
