I was wondering how many and what kind of Cichlid I can fit into a 10 gal? I might set up the tank tonight to get it cycled before I introduce the fish. I might change my mind however and make a Nano salt water tank... I don't know yet.. would like to get some advice first.

55 Gallons is the minimum reccomended tank size for cichlids.

in a 10 gal you could maybe have a pair of german blue rams but thats it.

It's too small for Rams and just about big enough for some of the smaller Apistos but would be ideal for shelldwellers.

You could start with a pair of the species known as shelldwellers although I would not recommend it because of the small tank size. Namely, Lamprologus Brevis or Ocellatus. Both are relativly small. However, if there is any aggression between the two fish, in a 10 gallon there won't be any respite and the bullied fish will almost certainly die.

The fish and yourself will find it beneficial to have a larger tank as already stated.
