I had a Mbuna 55 gallon setup for about 5 years and decided to get rid of it to build a reef tank... That tank lasted about 2 years before the cost and amount of time needed, and difficulty to move made it no longer an option. I really miss having my cichlids now. So I'm thinking of starting another tank. I plan on soaking the reef rock I had to remove the salt, they dried out over 2 months ago and are nice pieces. I used river rock last time and it was overly heavy.
My biggest issue is I no longer have my 100 gallon canister filter I had last time and instead I have a HOB skimmer. The thing holds 5 gallons of water and is superb for oxygenation. I was wondering if it is viable to use as a filter. I know it won't behave like a protein skimmer would in salt water, but I think in theory it would work quite well if media was put into the correct areas.

It looks like that. Minus the venturi.
