Hi!

Looking for advice on a 37 gallon light. See the compact flourescents, what is the difference in the lighting of them and the normal flourescents? Is it just the energy savings? Is the light odd colored? Can they sit directly on a hood like a normal double strip light or do they need to be propped up above the tank? What would the benefits be over a double strip light?

The CF fixtures produce a lot more lumens per watt, somewhere between 2 and 3 times as much as the same watt NO (normal output) flourescent, if your wanting a planted tank, a CF strip in the 6500K range is where its at. As for havign them off of the hood... Mine is right on my hood, but ti does get a little warm, some come with fans built in, and I know for sure that the Coral Life ones have little add on bases that you can buy.

Anid if your not afraid to pick up a tool, you can build your own for very little compared to buying a canopy. Here's a link to the canopy I made. I went all out for insane amounts of light, but this can give you an idea if you want to build your own.
