My mom has been wanting one for the house, I have been encouraging her :D . The subject came up a few days ago and my dad said if we do get one I can't use it for any of my tanks :grr: . I asked y and he said it will only make about 6 gpd and the ones that made more would be too expensive. I am willing to chip in too get a better one that I can use on my tanks. One question I have is a R/O filter made for aquariums is fine for drinking water right? Also can anyone recommend a good R/O filter around the $150 mark.

You can get one that does 24gph for around 110 dollars at your lfs. Tank r/o's and tap one's are the same.

My lfs are usually pretty expensive when it comes to that stuff. I found a corallife 24 gpd R/O unit at www.bigalsonline.com for $119.99 +shipping. I've heard pretty good things about the corallife's and actually have one but haven't had the tiem to set it up. Also, big als is actually a huge aquarium store, theres one in Florida about three hours from me and one in Pennsylvania I believe. Its primarily a Canadian fish store, but can be trusted. I just got some products from them not to long ago.

Im pritty sure people drinking pure RO is dangerous, as there lacking in all elements they take them from what they come in contact with (Or so ive read), therfor people drinking it is a BAD idea.

Not needed for FW tanks either, only certain SW ones.

must agree r/o water is not good for drinking,a hma filter would be far better, only takes out heavy metals, and the chlorine
mister-t

In that situation you'd either use part RO and part tap or add trace elements back into the RO to make it suitable.

I didn't know pure RO water was bad for people, is RO water with trace elements added back in safe for fish? I don't really know why my mom is interested in one, I don't really think she knows much about them. We have well water here and a water softener, so it really isn't needed. Our water is soft with no chlorines and 20 ppm of nitrate, the water goes straight from the tap to the tank. I very rarely add any conditioner.

Not good for drinking indeed. It is pure water with no solute what so ever. So basically if you drink it, your cells would lose water and solute to even the concentration. In other words, it's like taking a long bath and coming out with wrinkled fingers and toes, but instead, we are talking internal.

That isnt always true. Drinking RO water is only bad for you if you drink it on an empty stomach. It like drinking distilled water when you have an empty stomach, you will get a cramp. As long as you eat something or drink something else with it that isnt pure, there shouldnt be any harm done.
