I'd be thinking about midwater catfish, such as
Kryptopterus or
Dianema. In small tanks, schooling midwater
Corydoras would be fun, for example
Corydoras hastatus.
Otherwise, some of the schooling mormyids (e.g.,
Pollimyrus isidori) might be appropriate, if water quality and aquarium conditions allow. In hard water areas, the blind cave tetra
Astyanax mexicanus could be kept, though it is a fairly bullish animal that only works with equally robust tankmates. Similarly the South American puffer
Colomesus asellus is a gregarious midwater fish that buzzes about all the time, but it is somewhat nippy, and can only be kept with specific types of tankmates, certainly nothing slow, stupid or long-finned.
Cheers, Neale
