Im looking at getting a skimmer for my new upgraded tank (5 foot) now is it a protein skimmer I need?

Also what skimmer is it I need out of this lost HERE and will this do the trick?

I never had a skimmer before but seems like I should get one.

Do I need to get anything else with it and do I need to ever buy anything for it? Im guessing you just wash away the waste in the top section only? is this daily or weekly?

I don't know much about skimmers so all help would be appreciated so I can get one.

Cheers fellas :good:

well for the money you wont get any better than this. very good skimmers and they come with everything you need. i would go for the V2 600 though as i guessing your 5ft tank will be close to 600 litres?

if you can afford one i would have the Deltec MCE600 about £220 though.

stay away from the red sea prizm skimmers, i have one and its rubbish

with regards to working a skimmer, you have to get the micro fine bubbles at a rate where there are no bubbles comming out with the out flow water. the bubbles have to make contact with the water for long enough to attatch to the proteins your trying to remove, so the flow rate must be set up correctly.
and empty the cup when its full, mine is usually 4-5 days

That the problem mate, Im not sure!

I purchased a large glass tank and not sure on the gallon situation, it's 5 foot in length by about 1 foot in height

Give me the dimension & I'll work it out

ok multiply the 3 main sides with each other length X width X height/1000. this will give you the volume.
must be done in metric for litres.

boshank23> thought it was lenght (cm) X width (cm) X hight (cm) divide by 1000 to get liters or by 265 to get gallons (uk)
