well how long do you think it will take you to change tanks? do you plan on trying to sell this one so that you can buy a new one or something? or are you going to buy a new one and sell the old? i would just put them in a 5gallon bucket while i set up the new one if that is the case

what size of tank are you going to get? is there any way you can keep both tanks and split the fish between them? if you cant keep the old tank then set up the new one in another spot and transfer the gravel over to it to keep the bacteria going and take some old filter media and add it to the new one so it will cycle faster. once the new tank has been running for a few days add a fish from the old tank and keep an eye on the water tests and add a new fish every few days to keep the bacteria going. you shouldnt add all the fish at once as this will be too much for your new filter.
if you cant keep your old tank then i would ask the pet shop to hold your fish for you so that you can transfer all the gravel and old filter to the new one and run it with the new filter to get everything cycled again quickly. doing it that way and adding 2 fish a week later will get your bacteria colony going faster and it should have all cycled in less then 3 weeks.
the filter should be big enough to turn over the water 10 times in an hour.
its important that you keep an eye on water quality in this period as you may go through a mini cycle.
there just wouldnt be enough room to put 10 goldfish into a bucket. an alternative way would be to fill a bath with temp matched dechlorinated water (rinse well first) with half the tank water to give the fish more room to move. depends though if your mum would let you do this and put a heavy stone on the plug to stop the fish from pulling it up.

ahhhhhhh stick em in a bucket ,keep your old water and transfer everything across including gravel etc then top it up itl just be like doing a water change /top up

i dont know why i bother posting.

stick them in this, stick them in that. fine, do what you want.

It's alright, I agree with you, quickly cycling the tank and slowly adding the goldies is the best idea. He has way too many for the tank they're in and unless this new tank is 100 gallons then he should really split the goldies up between two tanks.

no way i would put fish into a bathtub though :dunno: ..and if they don't fit in 1 bucket, put them in 2...with an air pump obviously...i find buckets suitable as you can keep them dark and put them in similar-temped bathwater to keep the temperature right - although these are goldfish, so i'm sure they can live in stagnant water for a lil while when the tank is being cloned

maybe you should go re read all his posts to see how big these fish are.

i dont think putting them into buckets for an hour or two while you transfer the stuff over is going to do the fish any good. they need a cycled tank just as much as any fish does.

my advice, give them to the pet store to look after, and once the cycling has done then only put two or 3 in it, as thats all you will comfortably fit in that size tank for a few years. if you put all of them in 6 months or less down the line you will be needing to re house them again. for 10 goldfish you need at least 150 gallons of water which you just wont get unless you have 3 or 4 similar sized tanks.
if that seems a bit excessive then sorry but goldfish grow huge if given the opportunity.

it will take 3 weeks to clone the tank using a new filter, but if he uses the old filter then he can add them straight away, but the filter wont be good enough and he still needs to add more filters. a fluval 3+ only turns over around 750 litres an hour and the tank holds roughly 180, for that amount of fish he needs a heck of a lot more filtration as the fish grow.

i always put my goldies when i had them in a bath rather than a bucket if it was going to be for more than an hour.

as it is he is putting them into a tank that will only be about 4 gallons bigger than the older one. dont see the point unless he either sells most of them or keeps the other tank, though overcrowded is a lot better than having them all in one tank.

my point exactly theres not a lot of diff between the tanks so why pay a lfs to give em whitespot or some other nasty
