This is my first EVER snake!! I'm soooooo pumped!!! He's an 18" young ribbon snake, full grown he'll be about 3-4'. Right now he's in a 5 gallon tank until I get his 15 gallon ready (The 5 gallons not perfect, but its much bigger then the 1.5 gallon tank he was in in the pet store  I haven't thought of a name for him yet, so any ideas would be great!! He's a cheeky little fellow though, goes nose to nose with me on the glass whenever I look in on him. I'll give him a couple days to settle in then I'll start handling him :yay: :yay: :yay:

He's very cool, that pic of him with his tongue out is brilliant! I stuck my tongue out in imitation of him without meaning to when I saw it

He is very beautiful.. although if that is cedar or pine bedding get rid of it ASAP, they can die pretty quickly from that stuff, switch to aspen..

No worries, I was told by the pet store that it would be fine, then I find out its definatly not fine, ugh, stupid pet store, anyway his tank is lined with paper towels (was recommended on a reptile forum) until I can get out and buy new substrate, will probably get some kind of that reptile turf stuff, lol, I'm horrible with names of things.

Wood chipping is another item you could put him on, but you must remember not to feed him on chippings because he could swallow them.
Did the pet store recommend getting another tank to feed him in? Probably not, it has come to my knowledge over the last couple of years, the best thing to do is get another tank/viv and feed him in that, they can attack in there home viv's because they are used to feeding in there.

Using that container it's in now would be a good idea as a feeding container when you get a new tank..

Are you going to go bigger then 15g when it gets to 3-4' ?

To be honest I find using paper towels while not as natural looking is just as good for my snakes (they've plenty of hiding places, plants, etc) - I used to use aspen but found it had a tendancy to go everywhere....

The substrates that i've heard are safe to use are paper towels, newspaper, astroturf(the imitation grasss stuff), aspen chippings... pine could cause many repiritory troubles n kill the snake, the cleanest substrate is paper towels or newspaper, but astro turf is just as good n also looks more nantural. Very pretty lil thing XD

I don't like using any organic type beddings with rodents/reptiles because of the increased risk of parasites. They can live forever in that stuff because most people only spot clean and never fully change out the bedding.

I use recycled newspaper pellets or just papertowels because it's so much easier to clean and not organic.

I do a complete clean out every month, everything has to be disinfected with reptile spray. Just to zap any stray parasites.

Newspaper is the safest option, but my snake burrowed under it n used to get ink stains on her head, cus she a silly snakey.
