Im going to buy her a friend tomorrow :)

This is a big change for you Jessica. I was thinking I would see a bird. I think your little fellow is so pretty... I bet it is a much needed change for you. I think the hamster will be a different change of pace for you in the care taking.

nice hamster Jessica
but don't buy her a friend
she is a Syrian hamster and as such will fight with other hamsters.
Syrians are best kept on their own.

Oooh, yeah thanks Wolf! :D I've just been told by a friend of mine who breeds rats, ferrets, hamsters and mice and those sort of things to definately not get her a friend as well, as one will end up killing the other, so Esmarelda will be living alone! :D

And yes, its definately a change. I've not had anything small and rodenty since i had my chinchillas a few years ago! But the hamsters funny, she keeps falling off her wheel :D

I was thinking that would be a change for you. I love the birds also. But I like all different kinds of pets. So good luck with the care of your little fellow and it is so cute.

Ahhh Esmrelda is lovely
Yes, she's much prefer living on her own
I've always found red-eyed hammies just that bit more skittish and potentially nippy (than the black eyed ones), so she might require a little more patience to tame.

It's so cute, i agree with wolf they don't get on with there own kind, and if it's a female be prepared for the smell, when she in season, my god it's a strong smell.

No one told me there was a smell   But me and my little Esmarelda are getting on a bit better now though. She's taking food from my hand and has been out of her cage a few times without biting me, she just sits on my hand staring at me!!

Here's a few better pics of her though, she's getting braver now :)

She lovely and very cute, also watch your clothes they go in draws and bite through them, you pull something out to wear and there is holes in it  , and wires like phones and internet, they love to bite wires, plus end of carpets love to nibble there to, they are very distructive but cute.

I had chinchillas and they were really bad for chewing everything and anything!! Im fairly sure i still have my rodent proofing stuff for the wires and stuff though :D Oooh, just thought i'd let you guys know that she's just used her wheel thing for the first time, she's not very good at it though.. :/

Anyway, here's some more pics im sure you guys will find adorable

oh dear - but that's never a good thing to let hamsters roam without supervision

In fact they don't really like it and feel very insecure to roam in areas they do not know or recognise as their territory.

My hamsters loved those plastic balls though - but only ever for a maximum of 10 minutes at time - fully supervised.

And if you just removed the sawdust from her little "wee corner" on a daily basis you should have practically no smell whatsoever

Edit: just saw those yawning pics - brilliant !
Yeah, I've found syrian's generally too heavy for the wheels that attach with a little lever arm to the side of the cage :/ They are great for dwards etc. but not all that ideal for larger hamsters.

Good god that a big yawn for such a small animal.

She is a sweet little thing! Look at that huge mouth!! I've had two syrians. Theyr'e lovely creatures.
