Long or High?

Yard sale. Large dresser. Kid has lots of clothes, we need a new dresser.

(In my mind .... bigger dresser, bigger top, bigger fish tank!!!)


So, I'm pining to jump from 6 to 20. I need to what with all the blasted plants, not to mention the fish!

So, I am thrilled with the Eclipse hood and need the light weight of acrylic (since we will still be on top of a dresser!)

Eclipse hoods allow for either the 20 gallon high or the 20 gallon long.

I'm guessing the plants would appreciate high. But I'm guessing fish like to swim around more than they do up and down.

Which is the way to go?? Is there any real difference???

Can one get a 20 gallon acrylic tank that is of the long variety???

Get the twenty long by all means.

You can keep more fish in the long than the high. High tanks are designed for several reasons;

1. Makes a better display tank...and...

2. Their good for fish with high bodies such as Discus, angels and the such.

Acrylic tanks come in ALL size that glass tanks do, so there should be no problem there.

Ostrow, IMO, go with the long as the master has said. I have a 20gal high, and I HATE it. It is sitting collecting dust right at this minute. Also, hard to get enough light over a tank that size. It is very deep for the smallish size bulbs you must use on it. B)

Thanks for the advice. Having trouble finding acrylic tanks, at least online, in the 20 Gal long. Will check lfs, though, of course.

Ostrow, my oldest daughter has a 29gal on her dresser. One of the most perfect size tanks IMO.

don't know where folk find acylic aquariums, but they are seeming scarce on a web search. one or two companies only and one of those only has the high version. tenecor is the other and those are a fortune. fuhgetaboutit!

will trudge to lfs but glass will be heavy for the dresser, no?

Can be heavy, but I shudder to think of some of the places I have put tanks in desparation. But a good quality dresser should hold up to a 30gal tank no problem....
