Is normal wood ok to put into a tank? Ive never seen it done, so perhaps it wouldn't work-does it rot?

I was thinking that a nice old log would look nice in my tank. The drift wood i have makes my water look like tea from the tannins so i gotta think of something new. If it's ok to insert old logs, branches, twigs, whatever into my tank (yes, sterilyzed) will they seap tannins? does it all depend on what i pick?

I was also thinking some plain old sticks would be fun for my dwarf frogs.

I would not try it were I you.

Look around on ebay for some nice litle tank decorations that might fit the bill.

This depends on the type of wood and how long it’s been out side. I would avoid cutting down a tree and sticking that in as it'll not only leak tannins but all sorts of sap and other things, esp soft wood species (pines, conifers etc) which are full of oils. If the wood has been sat outside for months and is dry then it will probably have 'leaked' any potential nasties. This is exactly what wood yards do, its called aging the wood, they do it to remove the 'liquid' so it doesn't shrink when you build a house with it.

Drift wood on the beech is generally ok as it’s been floating around the worlds great oceans and so has aged nicely, but be careful of seawater seeping out obviously!

BTW the tannins from the bogwood you have will clear after a while, it just take a bit of time, but regular water changes should remove it after a month or so.

didn't u soak the wood before putting it in? I soaked mine for a week in a bucket changing the water twice a day and the colour only took a week to go, but if you already have it in your tank its gunna take a lot longer.
