Short story,

Bought 5 corys a few weeks ago that the shop had advertised as "Alexrodi".   First issue is that they are "Axelrodi" ..

OK..

Went out to a local "Famous" Garden center, stating with a "Bridgemere" ...  They had some "Loxoxonus".  Thats issue 2 !   They are called "Loxozonus"

Anyways....   Looked at them and thought, "They look like my Axelrodi".   In fact, after a bit of googling, I actually have Loxozonus !

Anyone else seen that LFS are getting either the name wrong, or the actual ID wrong  ?

Never seen an issue with names in my LFS, although some slang names you could call it.

Lfs no. Wal-mart, only on days that end in y.

Although had one tell me they don't stock cories. Two weeks later there they were.

Well its not always LFS fault, if they are ordering cories off a list of 20 odd species, whent they turn up with 'Loxoxonus' on the invoice, you lable them as that and price them up as necessary.

You are relying entirely on the person knowing the names of all the species of cory to know its spelled wrong? Just because they work in the LFS doesnt mean they knowevery fish under the sun, if the cories come in, they might not even know to double check they have been given wrong cories?!

I know this has happened to me many times, i know the obvious cories but on being sent 5 cories and none of which i could find pictures for in books, i couldnt id any of them as i didnt know which was which of the 5 names i had!!

Spelling wise, no.... they are all pretty sound round here..however the actual cory's listed as the wrong species is all to often.

I agree with MBOU though, 'most' shops label them according to what there invoice states. There are so many cory's which look alike, it really does take somebody in the know to be able to distinguish them if they do come in labeled wrongly.

The LFS I used to buy from sold me flying foxes instead of Siamese algae eaters, and I'm stuck with them now as it's a 200 mile round trip to exchange them.

Anybody want some flying foxes?

they need to do a bit more research on internet , i hear lots off rubbish in fish shops by the owners, it is a complex and sometimes confusing hobby , thank god for forums, it puts me on a few pointers , i nearly put api plant food in my tank but was alerted by a forum saying it would kill the corys , close one .

Im sure the cobolt blur gourami i bought yesterday are dwarf :s

Almost certainly - most Gouramis described as cobalt blue or powder blue are a colour variant of dwarf Gouramis.

Did you not want a dwarf Gourami?

Yes, wouldnt have room for 4 full sized. I said to the lfs guy that ive never heard of cobolt blue gourami before thats not dwarf but he was sure they were full size. I stuck with my own opinion, nodded and smiled and said ok.

I got a chinese algae eater instead of a otocinclus. My lfs is down the road but its too late now.

My local fish shop I had high thoughts of. Until they sold me a mosquito fish instead of a female guppy. Which in turn proceeded to shred the heck out of my other guppies' tails before I figured it out and got her out. But I feel at blame also not knowing it was a mosquito fish. But the similarity is unreal! Anyway, they gave me some free merchandise when they found out what happened and the gal is now also educated....so bonus! They are back in my good graces.

I just came back from my NSLFS (Not-so-local fish shop) and the conditions were horrible. He had some cory, but each in a separate tank with other fish, and a couple missing their barbels. A 6-inch common pleco in a 10g tank. Platys full of white spot. I almost came out of there with 5 tiger barbs, but I had no idea what I'd be bringing home with them. Kind of regret not getting them, though. The smallest one was about a half inch long! Sooooooo cute. Yep, I'm regretting not getting them.

Anyway, a bunch of dead fish in a few tanks, plus the algae was so bad in a few of the tanks you could barely see the fish. Ugh.

With things like identification it's often the whole sale companies fault. I was in my lfs and they had got some L168 in, I queried them because they looked like none I had seen. At first the lfs just brushed this off and said they just had different patterning. But they called the whole sale company and were told that they weren't L168's but a species of panaque instead. The company just sells them as 168's for some absurd reason!

I'm fortunate to have some very good lfs I can go to. Now, as far as spelling and grammar goes, and if anyone here works at, or owns an lfs don't take offence. But there's a reason that people who work at lfs' their whole life aren't out in the field doing scientific research :p.
