DOes anyone out there have any info on lobsters and crabs, what they eat, what other fish they are compatible with. Any links, suggestions on good species ANYTHING :) stories, ANYHTING

I can't tell you a thing about lobsters, but the following web site tells how to set up a tank for crabs. Fiddlers and Mudskippers are reputed to be fine mates. This topic has been touched on in the Oddballs Forum if you want to take a look there. That'd be a good place to ask about lobsters, too.

One thing for sure is don't put bottom feeders in with crabs and crayfish. They are liable to get eaten

That advice TAA gave doesn't go for just bottom dwellers. We had 2 crayfish (same thing basically) and Les saw them gang up one in front of and one behind a sleeping platy and kill her. If the ich in the tank hadn't got them first or the medications for it, we would have taken them right back to the lfs.

I think they should have a tank all their own and maybe put some feeders in it to give life to the tank, nothing real expensive or that you are really attached to! JMHO

Quite right PLC, they are also very oppurtunistic, ill or sleeping fish are likely to get eaten too.

yeah i was just thinking of setting up a 5 gallon with a lobster and some feeder guppies or something. Just trying to figure out what to do wiht my spare little tank.

cool lookin crab, thanks for the link but if there is no water and the substrate has to remain dry, how do you feed them feeder goldfish. Or did i misread and they need both water and land? again thanks for the link

Hey Steve-O!

You've probably gotten some good info by now, but sometimes experiences tell otherwise, so I'll tell you what I've been told, and what I saw.

My husband and I wanted to get one of those beautiful little blue lobsters they sell. The first time we saw them, there were several in differing aquariums within the fish shop, and each one was kept with some fish.
We spoke with 2 different sales representatives, and one guy said they were ok with other fish... and that they ate pleco / loach cookies.
The next guy we spoke with said he didn't know much, but one morning came into work and opened the shop, and found one aquarium where the lobster was sitting atop a pile of bones :( no fish left...

We didn't know really, so we wandered around the shop looking at other fish and stewing it over, and we watched one lobster go after an entire school of barbs!! It's wierd... some just sat in the tanks doing nothing, and others were totally agressive. If you had a really deep tank, you could probably keep one with other fish.

As for crabs, I owned 2 of them in a 10 gallon with tetras, an algae eater, catfish, and a kuhli loach. They were perfectly cohabitable, except they're real Houdinis! Once I came home after school and found one of them had crawled out the back of the aquarium (up a plant) across the floor about 10 ft and up the sofa! I kid you not.

I'm pretty sure they need water and land so if u would buy it you would need a terrarium and sand. :fish:

hey blue pacific. Great story. I'd like to have seen the look on your face when you came home to see the crab relaxin on the sofa  I was talking to some old friends and they used to keep about 10 crayfish in a big tank. Anyway they went away for the weekend and when they came home they opened the door and one was at the door. (oh by the way the tank was on the second floor!) and they found the others all around the house. Weird. THey forgot to close the lid on the hood.

Wow! It makes you wonder how long they can thrive outside of water...
Oh yes, it was a good thing I saw the crab on the sofa because he kind of blended in. He would've been sat on for sure! I always had a great laugh watching them climb the plants or the heater in the aquarium and then fall off... when they're falling relatively slowly through the water, their little legs are flailing everywhere... they were a real hoot! :D

just a follow up. the lfs had a sale on blue lobsters. I bought one for 9.99 can. It is so blue and when i drop shrimp pellets in he grabs them and nibbles, it looks do funny :)
