Hi all, just taken an interest in tropical fish after receiving my brothers neglected aquarium.

There's some kind of lobster or crayfish in it and I'm trying to find out what it is. It isn't blue like the Hammers Cobalt Lobster. Any suggestions of other types of lobster/crayfish it might be?

Can you take a pic? There are countless species.

I know you mention "tropical fish" but you should not keep any fish in with a crawfish unless you plan on them becoming an eventual meal.

I'll get a pic tomorrow hopefully as the tank is still at my parents house. There's quite an assortment of fish in the tank. Like I say, I didn't put them in there. My mis-informed brother did.

Okay, here's a picture I managed to get of it earlier on.

Any ideas?

Is the picture colors accurate? Is it grayish brown with orange joints? Is that a brown racing stripe (go faster stripe) down the back starting at the rostrum (shell above nose)? How long is it? How old is it? Try to get a pic of it out of the cave too. Did he catch it in your area or buy it at a store?

Wow.. I was googling trying to find a hit on what I could see of yours and it's not going to be easy unless someone knows a lot about them. Here are some good links I found though.

Yes that is in true colour.

It's body is about 4" long and he bought it from a store. Not sure on it's age.

Will try and get a better photo of it, but it's an elusive little beggar!!

Maybe you could check with the store to see what kinds of crayfish they normally carry or have carried in the past. Having a scientific name would help a lot.

The only Crayfish/Lobster you can legally buy in the UK is Cherax quadricarinatus, so I would think its almost certainly that species.

Thanks all!

I'm now pretty confident that it's a Cherax Quadricarinatus. It looked like it was about to go for one of the fish earlier on. It sort of arched it's rear and and then lunged towards one of them but the fish swam off. :hyper: Don't know what the hell they were thinking putting it in a 90 litre tank anyway!!
