Ok, so I've slowly begun to grasp the concept of liverock being the central filter for a SW tank. Now I've got a Tetratec PF150 dual media filter (150GPH) and a 145GPH powerhead with canister filter attached in my 20gal nano tank. If the liverock is the central filter, could I do away with the power filter and install like a 200GPH powerhead and canister filter.

The reason I ask is that the tetratec power filter has a chamber with a sponge in it that alternately fill and empties (sorta like a stationary bio-wheel) and if this is relatively useless on a SW with liverock, I was going to get another 20 gal and make a FW setup. :hyper: ...more fishies....

Thanx

Hi Sang

I am unsure of the particular products you mention, but my set I use an external for Phosphate removal & Carbon only, You can completly do away with your external as long as you have somewhere to put these items if you are using them,

IMO you dont want anything else in the tank for Bio-Filtration.

I would also circulate your water a minimum of 20 - 25x the overall tank volume
= 2500ltr (500g) per hour to create a flow over the live rock thus feeding the bacteria on it and tyr to have no dead spots.

All measurement/flow are in UK measurements
