All, firstly thank you to everyone who has replied to what feels like numerous posts recently. ;)

I knew a fair bit about freshwater fish keeping, but I have learned sooo much over the last few days about marine fishkeeping through this forum!

Anyway,

I plan to get around 25kgs of Live rock for my 180 litre tank soon, do i really need to get live sand aswell?

I have half a big bag full of coral sand leftover from my tang cichlid tank, would that be OK instead of live sand?

Cheers

You don't need live sand, no. Most people don't bother with it from what I've read. As for the coral sand, I think it would be ok, but I believe it is recommended to use aragonite sand, or a mix of aragonite and coral... to buffer the ph. Someone please correct me if I am wrong :)

i think your OK with coral sand, you can just get a handful fo live sand and throw that in to seed the lot, or it'd probably seed from your LR eventually

As long as the coral sand is of a fine grade you should be fine. Coral sand IS aragonite sand. Just as long as we're not talking crushed coral, cause that can trap detritus and be bad ;). The granules should be around table salt size or even as large as peppercorn size, no bigger.

Cheers mate, whats the difference in crushed coral and coral sand, I thought both were just crushed coral anyway? Is it just the size of the particles?

My coral sand is very fine, much smaller than a peppercorn and only slightly bigger than table salt.

My tanganiykan?! shell dwellers love digging in it ;)

ahaa! and therein lies the confusion... I was going to get crushed coral... and was told to get aragonite.

See, you learn something new everyday. :good:
