how much live rock should i put in a 30 gal? my lfs says 1.5 and another said if you plan on getting corals, than however much you like. don't really know what that means so i thought i'd come here for advice.

my lfs sells lr for $8 CAD a pound is that expensive? i tried craigslist but no one in vancouver seems to be selling live rocks.

45 lbs should be adequate. 8/lb sounds about average but you might get it a little cheaper if you wait/look around for a while

Many people believe the correct amount of live rock to have in a reef tank is between a minimum of 1 pound per gallon and a maximum of 1.75 pounds per gallon. Somewhere in the middle, like 1.35 pounds per gallon, would be ideal.

So, for a thirty gallon tank you would require approx 40.5 lbs as a minimum and a max. of approx 52Lbs, so somewhere between 18 an 23 kilos

More LR is not always better, it can create dead areas, so you are looking for a happy medium - hope that helps :good: i would probably go for the 18 k, as remember many corals come on lr :good:

Maybe have a search for a reefers club, Craigs list and good old flea bay - unfortunatly there are many reefers breaking down tanks at the moment because of the 'credit crunch'

Agreed, craigslist, ebay, local reef clubs, classified ads etc and you can prolly find it for more like $3/lb :)
