Hi

Just moved over to the 'salty side'(which has been fun but expensive!!). A question for you experts out there. Have a 70G (UK) tank, which I have set aside. Have the substrate & have just added water, which I am testing daily & seems 'touch wood' to be OK. Nothing live at all at the moment, wouldn't dare!

My question is how much per Lb's/ KG's of live rock(local LFS) would I need to get for this size of tank. They are saying a KG of rock per 5 litres- would this seem to be in line with the normal?

Hate to think that I am being ripped off, but that seems an awful lot of rock

You can never have too much filtration, but you can have too little. I would say that about a pound (~1/2 kg) per gallon is about the bare minimum you want to have but I strongly suggest that more would serve you better in the long run. If you can get 1kg per gallon then by all means do alternative 45 kg would be a good compromise. Remember that an inch or two of substrate will also be conlonised and forms the other part of your filtration system. I would also think that with a 70g tank that you would be thinking of a sump/refugium system as well which would be an alternative place to place some live rock if it is not wanted in the display tank.

Hope this helps

Regards

However, if you want a tank with room for the fish to swim then you don't want to go much above 1kg per 2 gallons.

Much of this will depend on what sort of tank and what sort of fish you want.
