the tank were picking up at the weekend has an internal filter in but i was thinking of removing the filter and plumbing in an external we have spare instead but i was thinking of using crushed or small pieces of LR |(along with other media) would this work?

does a marine tank even need a filter or just lots of power heads?

Many marine tanks only use internal circulation provided by powerheads, but this is only if you have sufficient amounts of live rock. Its beneficial to use this method if your going reef, but if your going FOWLR or Fish only, an external filter packed with LR rubble and other media is fine. Scrap the internal filter though, dont need that.

i`m going to keep it running for the time being, as the outled is feeding the UV unit. but should soon be upgrading it to an ehiem 2322 or a fluval 204.... just going to have LR rubble and floss in it i think

Live rock rubble is an excellent filter media.

They do say to keep the flow rate down as low as possible to keep the anaerobic properties of the live rock filtration too ( 200-250 lph max )

Steve :)
