i have prob just over 40kg in the tank already but obviously will need more to swap over to the 450l, have just bagged a bargain ( friend of a friend) with another 40kg for £40 so that 80kg in 450l..enough/too much?

yeah i knew that truck i had the same problem in my rio.. dont worry have enough powerheads (10x6000) to sort that out.. havent tried it yet of course  poor lil fish will probably be pinned to the glass
its 5ft so plenty of room for that amount and i think it will take the flow.. or rather hope it will

You have More than is "required" but you can never have too much live rock!

you can, you can have too much because it will restrict flow and cause dead spots if you have too much, 1 kilo a litre worked for me.

Well of course there's a point where there IS too much :p
But the fish won't be pinned against the glass with the amount Shelagh has.

A good way to check if you have deadspots is to slightly aggitate a small amount of sand around the rock forms. This will cause it to release primarily fish poop and sand dust which then works its way around the tank before settling down again. Since the particles are visible, it gives a good indication of where there is fast flow, to calmer areas, to no flow at all. Low flow areas aren't necessarily bad, as they provide ideal locations for corals that are adverse to strong currents, as well as some fish and invertebrates. However, if there are particles hanging in suspension, then it would be a good idea to reposition powerheads to ensure a more even distribution of water movement, or add another one. As Nemo said, usually the more live rock, the better but, ensure that you have sufficient current flowing around it.

Those powerheads Shelagh has are basically identical to the Hydor Koralias and shift a decent amount of water. I think its those that will be pressing the fish up against the glass, not the rocks lol :good:
