ok...with the fish I have what kind of live plants would be recommended...

I just have fake plants right now...

...and I know that live plants are actually healthier in the tank

if there are any links on live plants I wouldn't mind seeing some of those too

Here are some linksKrib
Aqua botanic
and Tropica
these are the ones i use most . rich gravel or substrate contains nutrients for plants sch as laterite and flourite where plain gravel is just that. I would suggest val and swords for your plants but i am no cichlid or rainbow expert and dont know if they are plant rippers or what. HTH :)

Your rams and cories won't harm the plants. Don't know about the rainbows, and it depends what kind of plec it is, do you know the species?

It's unlikely that the gravel you bought will have had fluorite/laterite in it, you usually have to buy it separately. Or is this a tank you've inherited from someone else?

...and how do you know if your gravel has laterite and/or flourite????

Most ppl add laterite and/or flourite to the tank and then add some fine gravel over it. laterite contains a large amount iron and it is a ground clay not gravel

have a look at the lfs for laterite, Humis, peat, etc for adding to tank and cover it with 1inch of fine gravel
