only had my tank set up a week ( boosted bacteria with media from another tank), got various cummunity fish, sand at bottom, ordered 10 various live aquarium plants, along with freeze dried bloodworm etc from aquatic sales uk

any tips? are they ok with sand ? will they need any special care?

I would doubt any of them will have problems with sand, but for other requirements, you'll have to identify them after you get them, apples.

This is a good place to look up plants, with picturees, as is Tropica's site, but there you sort of have to know what you're looking for.

What size of tank do you have? What type of filter? What type of fish? You may damage your filter (if using canister or Hang On Back) with the sand, depending on the type of fish, they may kick some sand around which might get sucked up into the filter. If you have a Wet/Dry filter, you should have no problems, since the overflow is near the top and the water that enters the Wet/Dry filter by gravity.
