hi guys i have had live plants in my tank fore a little wisle now and all they do is die. i have added liquid plant food and also pellets under the plants.
I am thinking of re doing my whole tank bith a new internal background and changing my gravel to sand. If i put plant substrates under the sad will it be anoth to keep plants alive without any other treatment ?

What size is your tank? What lighting do you have, wattage, T5, T8 etc? What level of planting do you want, heavily or just scattered around your tank? What fish will be in your tank? What filter do you have? What type of plants are you hoping to keep? Let us know these details and we can help. :)

What plant fertilizer did you add previously too?

Theirs no need for a plant substrate under your sand imo.
Look at my heavily planted tank alex, i dont use it. I just plant straight into the sand and use ferts thats it.
Even if you did use an plant supplement substrate, it wouldnt work and feed your plants forever. It eventually gets exhausted.

Like stevo asked above.....
How big is your tank?
What fish do you stock?
what lighting and wattage is your lighting?
How many hours are they on for?
What plants are you attempting to grow?
And what ferts was you using?

Answer these and it will help us help you
