real plants need food, light and CO2 but they lower the concentration of waste in the water and oxygenate the water as well and plus they look good and create a more natural enviroment for your fish. your fish can tell the difference bewteen live and fake you know.

Live plants, no question.

The benefits are too numerous to mention, but here's one that doesn't get mentioned a lot:

The fact that having live plants means that your tank is continually changing helps satisfy that "I need something new" desire, and leads to less of the "maybe I can fit just one more fish in there" thing. :)

Plastic don't rot.
Plastic don't die. :-(
Plastic ain't sensitive to water parameters. :S
Plastic need not defend itself from herbivorous creatures. :flex:

Live gives off O2 and removes nitrates.
Live is what fish have in the wild.
Live don't look like plastic.
Live has the potential to look this good.

I have lots of real plants in 2 of my tanks but only fake in my coldwater as they were just getting broken up because if the fish munching them.

I prefer live over fake anyday. I think that only fake plants trying to look real can look any good, then what's the point of buyingfake plants that look real instead of real?

:dunno:

I only want live plants in my tanks.

I don't have the greatest luck with plants because my corys are quite content to have a lower level of light than most plants require to grow well. :X

However, they live and grow a little and that makes me feel happy when I look at them! :D

Ah! There's the rub! Most fish sold in stores are commercialy bred. Would they know what a real plant looks like if they never saw one? :shifty:

I would like to have live plants someday, but right now I don't know enough about keeping them to try it, I would probably kill them anyway, I'm not great with plants.

I've got real, but they aren't doing well. One mondo grass died, one potted wisteria died (it was bad when I got it), 3 mondo grasses are turning yellow, my acorus was eaten but is regrowing, my silver dollars and plec really messed up my 2 swords.

The only good thing that happened is that my java fern is reproducing.

Wow!! Seems like I have caused quite an uproar! Continue to post guys!! I'm getting some great feedback and advice from both sides   .

I think that I will use fake until i get more experience in the tropical fish feild..everything is trial and error

THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE!

If you start, start with cheap, easy-to-raise plants, like java ferns. They're very resilient, not to picky when it comes to conditions, and you can tie them down to rocks. Same goes for java moss.
