back when i got my first tank, about 3 years ago, i knew nothing about having a tank, and filled the tank with too many fish, most of them unsuitable for it. anyways, i also got 2 shrimp, i think called ghost shrimp or something, they are see through anyway.
they were getting on fine despite the unsuitable fish probably wanting to eat them, every now and then i'd see them, especially in the morning when i caught them unawares when i switched the tank light on and they were just zooming about. then last year i got home and found one of my shrimp about 4ft away from the tank, in the middle of the dining room carpet. somehow, despite getting from the tank, down to the floor and 4ft across it with a dog in the house, he was still barely alive so i picked him up and put him in a little bowl of tank water. he died, but i wasnt surpised.
after that, the other shrimp seemed harder to find, but maybe ocne a month i'd catch a glimpse of it, bearing in mind the tank is quite small, it was quite a shock whenever i saw it. however, for the last 4 or 5 months ive not seen it. id assumed hed been eaten, escaped, died and decomposed, or stuck in the filter. i gave up on him. couple of days ago i stripped the internal juwel filter down to rinse the sponges out and fit a new heater. still no shrimp, or indeed fish that have mysteriously vanished .
today however, i lifted the lid to adjust the temp and lo and behold, theres my little super invincible shrimp sat on top of the filter sponge stack minding his own business haha i couldnt believe it, still alive, in the warmest, safest, most nutritious (for him) bit of the tank. i tried to fish him out but i had to go to work, and as i was trying to gently get him on a spoon, he zoomed off down into the depths of the filter so he can stay there, if i happen to see him again at some point i'll try get him, or when the filter next needs changing, but for now hes obviously doing alright for himself.
so yeah, just a little story of my death defying shrimp.
