I posted this up the other day but have since discovered that the title led some readers to think I wanted to feed frogs to another pet!! so, hopefully under this new title (cos I couldn't figure how to change the other) I'll find out if squishy the lion head would be nice to some froggie friends!!

''So far all the reading around I've done has only served to confuse me more!

I have a tank 24"x12"x12" with currently 2 lionhead gold fish in it. One fish is moving out into another tank as he is a bully, plus my flatmate chose him so I said he can go live in her room and she's bought a tank for him to go and bully himself in!

The fish that is left, Squishy, is very mild mannored (if a fish can be so!) and wouldn't cause any newcomers any problems I dont think. The reason why i bought the tank was because I wanted some African dwarf frogs, but I fell in love with squishy when I went in for plants and had to take him home!!

So what I want to know is, would some ADF's be ok with my lionhead? I know lion heads are concidered cold water fish, but all the fancy goldfish sites I've read suggested temps of 22-24 c, which is what they're at and seem quite happy. As I understand frogs require the same temp and desire the same pH conditions (7.5). So, environments matching would they be ok together? I understand stocking levels need thinking about so is my tank large enough to support my lionhead and perhaps 2-3 frogs? I'm totally new at this so excuse my ignorance! I'm doing all my checking now so as not to prematurely end any froggie lives. If my tank is not suitable I shall either buy another one or leave it and have squishy on his own

Cheers''

I have to confess I was one of the people who thought the original thread was asking if Squishy could eat frogs, so I feel obligated to reply :) I don't know much about Lionheads, but one of the main concerns with goldfish is space. I think from your description of the tank dimensions that you've got a 15 gallon tank. In general, goldfish have different requirements than tropical fish. Since tropical fish tend to be slim-bodied, the broad rule is 1" of fish per gallon of water. However, since goldfish are thicker bodied and therefore produce exponentially more waste the rule is 1" of fish per 10 gallons of water. Since lionheads can grow to be about 6-8" long (I think, from what I read), in the future the dilemma would be where to house him. How big is Squishy now?

Anyways, this would be my main concern right now. They do seem peaceful and tolerant of higher temps than most goldfish. It might be productive to ask about lionheads in the coldwater fish section to see what they think over there since I am definitely not an expert!
