just got a new 10 gallon aquarium. My mom wanted to know how can I find out if it's safe? As in that when I put in the water and turn on the lights it won't short circuit. Sorry if I'm not putting it in the right terms, I'm totally clueless about this stuff.

If you've got a freshwater tank and you purchased a strip light fixture for the tank, its really hard to get it to short circuit. Obviously, if you dump it into the water you'll have problems, but so long as its in position atop your tank, you should be perfectly safe. The only other saftey concern is water changes, you dont want to pour a gallon of water over the light when its running
