As I'm sure some know, I've been in the process of setting a 55 gallon planted tank.

a few weeks ago I bought plants, with the intention of getting a light the same week. When I got the light, I realied it was a good inch to skinny for the tank. I'll be returning it. I'm hesitant about getting another hood, so I was wondering if anyone had any links to a cheap, mounted tank light, preferably under $100. I'm in the US by the way.

In the meantime I've got a lamp just suspended over the tank, but the plants aren't doing very well.

Thanks everyone!

Try a web search for "T-5 HO aquarium fixture." I managed to pick up some nice ones that way about a year ago.

Thanks I found quite a few!

Do they need a glass canopy? Can't quite get an answer anywhere.

I use mine with a glass cover to prevent excessive evaporation of my tank's water. This time of year you would be surprised how fast the water goes from an uncovered tank. I just get a piece of glass cut to size and then cut in half lengthwise. A few pieces of plastic aquarium hinge and you have a functional cover that will limit water losses. Another option is a nice layer of any floating plant to prevent so much water loss. I do that in an old stainless steel framed tank that I have a hard time covering.
